This testing method is mostly common in detecting hairline cracks, flaws, leaks, surface porosity, and fatigue on castings, forgings and welded surfaces. This test method is the lowest cost method after visual inspection as the operator only requires three solutions to complete the test. One solutions seep into cracks and flaws and another draws the penetrate out from the surface and then inspected for bleeding under natural light.
Dye penetrant Inspection is predominantly used on non-ferrous materials in aerospace industries, shipping and offshore, petrochemical industries and stainless industry.
Some of the common parts tested are stainless steel welded joints, aluminium alloys joints, turbine blades, stainless steel fittings, castings and forgings, weld overlays (satellite), aerospace engine parts, etc.
Penetrant testing standard: Penetrate testing of products and components – AS 2062
